Showing Up: The Heart Behind Every Club Sports Trip

If you’re new here, there’s something you should know about me: a big part of my life happens on pool decks. As a swim mom, I’ve spent more weekends than I can count sitting on bleachers with a heat sheet in one hand and breakfast in the other. Early alarms, packed bags, soggy towels, and hours of waiting for a race that’s over in seconds is perfectly normal to me. And I know I’m not alone. Whether your weekends are spent at the soccer field, volleyball court, or baseball diamond, you understand. These aren’t just hours in the stands, they’re seasons of showing up, cheering hard, and collecting memories we’ll hold long after the final whistle or the last splash.

While most of our meets are close to home, there are a few each year that have us booking hotel rooms, comparing flight options, and packing for more than just a day. Somewhere along the way, I began to wonder: how can we make this kind of travel meaningful? Yes, we’re traveling for the sport, but we’re also traveling with our kids, and that is a gift. These trips become threads in the fabric of their childhood, moments woven into our parenting, and opportunities for connection and memory-making.

Here’s what I try to remember:

  • The hotel is more than just a place to sleep. It’s where we laugh over takeout, wind down with a movie, or sit in the lobby chatting with other families. A great hotel can set the tone for the whole weekend.
  • When you can, choose flights that work with you, not against you. A direct flight at a reasonable time might cost more, but it’s worth every penny for the extra rest it gives your athlete (and you). Arriving without exhaustion means everyone can settle in, adjust, and start the trip on the right foot.
  • Exploring the area, even briefly, can add such a memorable layer to a trip. Maybe it’s finding a local ice cream shop after a long day of competition, walking through a downtown you’ve never seen, or enjoying a fun dinner at a local hot spot. It doesn’t have to be elaborate; it just has to be intentional.

We often think “meaningful” has to be monumental, but so much of it lives in the quiet in-between: The conversations that unfold in the car, the whispered pep talks before a race, the way they look for you in the stands, and your steady, unwavering presence they’ve come to count on. Club sports travel can be a whirlwind, but in the middle of the hustle, there’s real opportunity for connection, growth, and unforgettable moments together. We may not always get to choose the schedule or the city, but we can choose how to make the most of these moments we have watching our kids do what they love.
